Free State ANC plans its next move following High Court ruling

Today the Bloemfontein High Court has barred the The African National Congress (ANC) in the Free State from holdings it’s elective conference this weekend.

The court ruled that the party’s Free State provincial conference cannot go ahead as scheduled because branch general meetings held in four regions over the last four months were unconstitutional, and in breach of the ANC Constitution.

The Free State ANC has already been ordered by another court to hold its elective conference this weekend because the mandate of the provincial party’s leadership expired earlier this year.

Thabo Meeko, Free State ANC spokesperson says despite logistical difficulties and set backs they were very disciplined.

We were very disciplined and we adhered to the national instruction because we understood that it was very tried and difficult year for the ANC in preparing for the December conference.

While Meeko says they will comply with the courts ruling, Hanno Bekker, the attorney who represented an Free State ANC member in court says he doubtful whether the provincial executive can preside over processes that are free of manipulation and intimation.

Based on the previous history, I am in doubt whether this will indeed happen. We are willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, as we said in from beginning let still to internal rules and processes.
