Dissident ANC members in the Free State will attempt to block the province from sending delegates to the party’s national elective conference in the Bloemfontein High Court on Thursday. They accuse the party’s provincial leadership of blatantly ignoring the Free State High Court’s ruling on 29 November, 2017 that biennial and branch general meetings conducted between August and November were irregular, unlawful, unconstitutional and/or in breach of the ANC constitution. JOHANNESBURG – With just five days left before the ANC’s critical elective conference kicks off, a range of legal challenges continue to haunt the party’s preparations. Five provincial conferences are being challenged in court by warring factions. A party at war with itself politically, the ANC now finds its problems compounded as legal warfare between party members hobbles pre-conference proceedings in five provinces. JOHANNESBURG – The African National Congress Women’s League (ANCWL) in the Free State said it has “noted with disappointment” the Bloemfontein High Court ruling which found that 29 branch general meetings were unlawful and irregular. The court ruling on Wednesday read in part: “The provincial conference of ANC Free State scheduled for 1 to 3 December 2017 will be a nullity and cannot be held until the aforesaid meetings have been held in a lawful manner and in accordance with the constitution of the ANC”.
