Judgment due in crucial ANC Free State case, on eve of national elective conference

Judgment is expected on Friday afternoon on whether the Free State’s more than 400 delegates will be interdicted from attending the ANC’s national conference. Four ANC members have taken the provincial executive committee (PEC) to court to have it and the province’s delegates barred from attending the conference. The highly anticipated conference starts on Saturday. A new president for the party is set to be elected in the coming days, with it mostly being a two-horse race between Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa and Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma. The Free State has put its vote behind Dlamini-Zuma. Hanno Bekker, attorney for the disgruntled members who are backers of Ramaphosa-aligned former Free State deputy […]

Members of Free State ANC file urgent court application over conference

On Tuesday, four disgruntled members of the ANC in the Free State filed an urgent court application to have the results of the party’s provincial conference, held earlier this week, set aside. The applicants have also asked the High Court in Bloemfontein to interdict delegates from the province from attending the ANC’s national conference, which is due to elect President Jacob Zuma’s successor. The four members have asked the court to hear the matter on an urgent basis on Thursday morning. This follows a High Court order that declared 29 branch general meetings (BGMs) unconstitutional and which also interdicted the provincial conference from taking place. However, the provincial executive committee […]

Dlamini-Zuma’s Free State victory in doubt

Thabo Manyoni, the deputy chairman of the ANC in the Free State, has indicated that the outcome of the provincial general council in which Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma was nominated for the position of president could be challenged. Manyoni welcomed on Wednesday the outcome of a court battle in Bloemfontein in which 29 branch general meetings were declared unlawful, irregular and unconstitutional. The court ordered that the provincial conference, at which Manyoni was set to oppose longstanding ANC Free State chairman Ace Magashule at the weekend, be postponed until the meetings had been rerun. Manyoni and his supporters did not attend Tuesday’s provincial general council in Parys. “We reject in the strongest […]

BREAKING NEWS: ANC’s Free State conference called off

The ANC Free State provincial conference will not take place this weekend afterall. On Wednesday the High Court in Bloemfontein ordered the conference not to be held until 29 branch general meetings, which the court declared unlawful and irregular, are conducted in a lawful manner. Hanno Bekker, attorney for the 26 ANC members who brought the case, said there had to be seven days’ notice given before a branch general meeting could be held. There was thus not enough time to convene these meetings, Bekker said. The court’s decision comes a day after the Free State provincial general council was held in Parys, where Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma was nominated as […]

Dlamini-Zuma wins an ace

Dlamini-Zuma wins an ace

The ANC in the Free State has put its support behind presidential hopeful Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma to take over the baton as ANC president in December. The Free State is the first province to officially endorse Dlamini-Zuma. The Women’s League, Youth League and the Umkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans Association have also come out in support of Dlamini-Zuma. Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa has officially been nominated by the Northern Cape and the Western Cape, the smallest provinces in terms of how many delegates can be sent to the conference. Mpumalanga chairman David Mabuza was nominated as deputy president by the Free State, while Nathi Mthethwa cracked the nod as national […]

Free State ANC embroiled in factional power struggle

The ANC’s factional woes continue as six members in the Free State have raised the red flag about several irregularities in recent branch general meetings and its national officials are heading to the Eastern Cape on Monday to continue their probe into whether that province’s September elective conference should be nullified. This does not bode well as the countdown to the party’s national elective conference hit the two-month mark this week. Business Day understands that the national officials will head to the Eastern Cape on Monday to meet disgruntled regional leaders. This was after ousted chairman Phumulo Masualle and his allies lodged a complaint with Luthuli House about the process […]

ANC Free State member readies legal challenge

As ANC top officials on Monday faced up to a deadline to nullify the newly elected leadership in the Eastern Cape, a party member in the Free State was preparing to approach the High Court in an urgent bid to have the provincial executive committee (PEC) disbanded. The ANC is facing court challenges on various fronts against the legitimacy of its structures a mere two months before its national elective conference in December. The ANC in the Free State has confirmed that its provincial congress will take place from December 1-3, as part of a High Court order handed down on Friday. ANC Free State spokesman Thabo Meeko said they […]

ANC’s NEC must disband Free State executive committee, member says

An African National Congress flag. Picture: DAILY DISPATCH/PHILLIP NOTHNAGEL An ANC member in the Free State has demanded that the ruling party’s national executive committee (NEC) disband the provincial executive committee (PEC), saying it is “no longer constitutionally mandated” to represent the province. If his demands are not adhered to by October 8, Lefa Mifi, from Dewetsdorp, has threatened court action. In a letter sent to the ANC’s national communications e-mail address, Bekker Attorneys — for Lefa Mifi — says the ANC constitution makes it clear that an elective conference should take place every four years. The last provincial conference was held in May 2013. It is understood that Mifi […]
